MINNIE

“Just friends.” I repeated the phrase to myself as I stroked a hand down the soft, white blouse I was wearing, ensuring it was correctly tucked into my jeans. “We’re going to try being just friends.” Maybe if I said it enough times I’d believe it could come true.

“You act like you haven’t had guy friends before,” Grace teased from where she was laying on my bed, her head hanging off the end so she was studying me upside down.

“I mean, sort of. Normally it’s been group things, though, not hanging out with guys one-on-one,” I admitted, wiping my sweaty palms on my pants. “Besides, none of those guys knew what I tasted like.” A blush covered my cheeks as I muttered the words and Grace laughed so hard she tumbled off of my bed, falling into an ungainly heap as she continued to chuckle.

“Was his tongue talented at least?” Mel teased me, tossing a marshmallow into the air and catching it in her mouth before winking at me.

“No comment.” Heat burned in my cheeks, and I resisted the urge to glance in the mirror and watch the color creep its way upwards. Even my damn ears were hot—so much for needing to put on blush.

“That’s a yes,” Grace called over her shoulder to where Mel sat on the bed, surrounded by the bowls of snacks they’d been munching on. We’d had our standard girls’ night sleepover at Grace’s house last night, but Miles had talked me into having brunch together today. No stress, no pressure, just brunch …

That had been his argument at least.

“It’s weird, right?”I blurted out, looking between where Mel and Grace were still lounging in their pajamas and tossing what was left of the snacks leftover from last night between each other. “I mean, we’ve had sex.” My voice cracked on the last word and Mel let out a resounding belly laugh, nearly dropping her bowl.

“You know that isn’t a dirty word, right?” She gasps, wrapping an arm around her stomach as she tries to catch her breath. “You’re allowed to say it all you want.”

“Shut up,” I grumbled, trying to tuck stray hairs back behind my ears. “I can say dirty words. I swear all the time.” Well, sometimes. I huffed out a breath, my hands unable to stay still as I began to straighten the things on Grace’s dresser. “Maybe I should call him and cancel.”

“Nope.”

“Uh-uh.”

Mel and Grace spoke at the same time though Mel’s comment was a bit garbled due to the spoonful of peanut butter she’d just stuck in her mouth. Eating spoonfuls of straight peanut butter was a time-honored girls’ night tradition, and despite it being the next day, I knew none of the leftover treats would go to waste.

Grace stood up, coming forward to wrap me in a tight hug, her head resting on my shoulder. “You deserve happiness, Min.” Her words were no more than a whisper in my ear, but they caused tears to well in the corners of my eyes as I squeezed her tight.
